Oak Wilt is a disease that is robbing property owners of beautiful shade trees and respectable property values. Methods are available to reduce its spread and minimize its impact. Oak wilt, a disease caused by a fungus, Ceratocystis fagacearum, is known to occur in at least 55 counties in the state of Texas alone. Once a single oak tree becomes infected the disease most commonly is transferred to other oaks through the root system. This spread may happen at a very rapid pace. Trenching to disrupt interconnected root systems and removal of infected trees is the recommended method by the Texas Forest Service.
